Do You Know ...

... the ABCs of effective speaking?
Check out our new website: AtoZpublicspeaking.com.

...how to go from good to great?

Read this month's article, Be Great in 2008.

... the power of listening?
Listening has bottom line impact.

American Airlines committed to listening to employees' suggestions.  A flight attendant made a recommendation that saved them $40,000 a year. Over time, listening saved them enough money to buy a new jet.

What was the recommendation? Find out in the Listen and Sell CD.
Motivational Moment

"Greatness is not a function of circumstance. Greatness, as it turns out, is a matter of conscious choice."

- Jim Collins, Good to Great
The Science of Speaking

Be Great in 2008!
by Diane DiResta

Good communication skills are one of the stepping stones to greatness.

In his book, Good to Great, author Jim Collins identified the characteristics of great companies. Great companies have great leaders. And great leaders are great communicators.

So what's the secret of great speaking? Reagan knew it, Martin Luther King knew it, and Barack Obama certainly knows it.

Great speakers connect with their audience.

Good speakers have a solid message and well-honed platform skills. But they speak from their intellect.

A great speaker evokes emotions and moves a crowd. They talk from the heart. They're real. They express their passion and they feel the audience.

Here's a simple formula - EELEyes, Emotions, Language.

To connect with an audience, you need to hold them with your eyes. Really look at each person.

Exchange energy by feeling their feelings and expressing genuine emotion.

Use language to paint a picture. Dr. King described children being judged by the "content of their character." Mr. Obama tells the audience that "together we can make a difference. His inclusive language sends a message that we're all part of a bigger mission.

Great speakers make the audience feel important. They know in their souls that's it's not about them it's about you!

Commit to this: Be great in 2008!
